Hornaday Award

Don Combs received the William T. Hornaday Silver medal tonight for excellence in conservation, in front of a packed Stamler Dining Hall at Camp McKee. It was the longest standing ovation I've ever seen at Camp.

Pictured are his Hornaday Adviser, Tim Brown, his mother Leslie, Don, his father Don II, and Scout Executive, Kelly Hampton.

Old McKee Neckerchiefs

Digging around a bit tonight and I found a couple of old custom neckerchiefs. This 1985 one was a provisional week that included some High Adventure trips. We stayed up in Campsite #1 and had a great time!

This one was from a Junior Leader Training weekend. Johnnie Ross was the SM and I was the Assistant. I remember that we got some mortician's wax and faked an accident in the old Dining Hall, and 2 kids actually passed out. Too real of a first aid drill!

It was a beautiful weekend.

A ceremonious occasion for all.

Kawida is getting pretty good at cheerful service. Thanks to all!

Circle Completed

Way back in the early 80's, while I was working on Staff up at the Maine National High Adventure Base, I collected a bunch of their stuff. I traded all of it to some guy in Massachusetts for a lot of National Jamboree stuff and some very old Scout knifes. It was a good trade for me and him, at the time.

Over the years, I wished that I still had that Maine stuff.

I started seeing some things pop up on eBay and contacted the seller and low and behold, it was the same guy! I've gotten everything back except for 1 item and if I live long enough, I'll find it.

Happiness is a new (old) patch!

Hornaday Medal

You don't see these everyday!

Don Combs' William T. Hornaday Silver Medal arrived this week and it is a beauty. Since the inception of the BSA there have been 2 million Eagle Scout medals awarded. Around 1,100 of these rare jewels.

Don's presentation ceremony will be June 25, right after supper and before the Executive Board meeting at Camp McKee. Come if you can. Chances are, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, just to witness such an honor.

Mr. Barnes

June 1, 2009

Mark, Michael, Matthew, Martin, and Marlin:

It is with deep regret that I have just read the “Kentucky Standard’s” online edition and have learned about your father’s death. Mr. Barnes was truly a great influence in my life to say the least.

Those Scouting days back in the 1970’s with Troop 142 made a huge impact in my life. Being an Eagle Scout at the American Legion Post was something back then. Camp Covered Bridge, Rough River Reservation, Kay Hibb’s Lake, and all of the other camp outs and meetings were just a wonderful time in my life.

It made me cry, when the obituary stated that: He was the founding Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #142 of Bardstown. Indeed he was, and I understand that it still continues strong today at the Methodist Church. What a wonderful legacy!

Myself, I reside in Pikeville, KY and am still active with the Boy Scouts of America. I started a Troop a few years ago, and continue to camp and hike just like we did so many years ago.

Your father may be gone in body, but his influence and spirit, carries on still today and will so, long into the future.

I can still hear his voice, every time I take a bunch of kids camping, and I tell them all the great stories about “My Old Scoutmaster”, Wayne Barnes and Troop 142.

Yours in Scouting,

Barry Goff
