Anderson's Department Store

Anderson's Department Store in Pikeville is officially out of the Boy Scout Supply business. It seems that our little local Scout store wasn't selling enough volume to warrant distributorship with the BSA.

Mr. Anderson was a Boy Scout and was a POW in WW II. He had been selling Scout uniforms and such for a very long time.

Truly an end of a great era.

Fall Camporee 2009

You know you are learning something new, when everyone is watching you closely.

Fire and knives are all part of Scouting.

Learning to raise the flag properly.

White Water rafting on the Russell Fork River is fun.

This is the first District Camporee, in a long time, that we did some cool high adventure.

Everyone got wet and Glen grew some wild hair?

The Saturday night camp fire is always the best!

LNT Trainer

Two new youth leadership opportunities lie ahead next year. The first was the Troop Webmaster. Now the Troop Leave No Trace Trainer emblem is available.

I'm not sure on what the training requirements and position responsibilities will be on this new job.

Nice looking badge of office though!

Shawnee Neckerchief

I picked up this old neckerchief this week. A nice piece of history from our area. I really miss event neckerchiefs and trail medals. Maybe we can get back to those in the next 100 years?

Sports Bronze

Several of Venture Crew 12 worked on the Sports Bronze yesterday.

Everyone did very well, learned a lot, and had fun.

Venturing and ice cream go so well together!

Knife, Fork, and Spoon

Well Scouting has been tied to something stupid in the National News. Some Tiger Cub took a knife, fork, and spoon to school and has been suspended.

There is a reason it is called a knife, fork, and spoon and not a fork, spoon, and knife, because it is a knife! You can't take it to school, an airport, court house, etc.

Whoever gave this to the kid should have told him that.

That is the way it is.

Quartermaster Award

Don's Quartermaster awards came in, and I must say, I am impressed. Ship 12 is in the process of scheduling a "Landship Ceremony" to present this very special recognition.

2 New Silver Awards

Last night at the Troop and Crew 12 meetings, a review was held for Aaron Shepherd and Will Goff for their Venturing Silver Award. They both passed!

Will and Aaron have done just about everything together. Arrow of Light, Eagle Scouts, Vigil Honor members, Ranger Award, 2 NOAC's, Northern Tier, and they are both on Staff next year for the National Jamboree.

It has been a long road since that cold and snowy District Polar Bear Swim, in which they were the only 2 to attend.

They have come a long way! Congratulations!!

Practice It

One other observation from the Fall Fellowship, was the fact that we had some special guests. Now some might argue that, if it is an O.A. event: non-members should not be allowed. I believe that if it has "Fellowship" or "Banquet" attached to it, then we can bend a little.

If all we do is say the Scout Oath and Law, then that is just repeating. If all we do is repeat the O.A. Obligation, then that is just saying words.

It truly happens when we practice it in everyday life and a social setting is a good start.

Even if all your buddies are giving you a hard time!

A Very Special Day

Saturday, at the Fall Fellowship, was a very special day for the Shepherd family. Mike Shepherd got to see his son elected Lodge Chief and also received his Brotherhood. Aaron Shepherd, was elected Lodge Chief and got to present his father, with "his old Brotherhood sash".

That doesn't happen very often, and indeed was a very special day!

Kawida 2009 Fall Fellowship

It all started with the "Hallelujah Trail" movie.

The "Rope on the Stick" puzzle.

Trading Post gurus.

The morning theme was shooting sports.

This is the trigger. When you pull it, the gun goes "bang"!

Aaron knows how to bust the clay pigeons.

These guys will do great next year. Good luck!

Quest Games were part of the afternoon theme.

The Toilet Paper Wrap was a hoot!

Is this an S 45 b or c? I'm so confused!

The Indian Dancing was awesome again this year!

The Potato Dance is always a big hit.

Remembering the Golden Rule on this Sunday morning for everyday.

Kawida Lodge works hard, plays hard, and always eats well.
We are truly blessed.
