Venture Patrol

I was asked a very good question earlier this week. "Can a member of a Boy Scout Troop, who is in a Venture Patrol, attend our Council's VOA activity this fall?"

I wasn't sure, so I turned to my Venturing Mentor, Keith Gehlhausen, who is the Central Region Venturing Chair, was my Powder Horn Course Director, and was on Staff at the Sea Badge I attended. He has forgotten more, than I will ever know!

In short, the answer to the question is "No".

A Venture Patrol is a group of older Boy Scouts in a Troop. There are no Venturing Patrols. You are either registered in a Venture Crew(including awards, trips, etc.), or you are not.

Thanks Keith!

Camp Offutt

I see that an old Camp Offutt patch is for sale on eBay. Before there was McKee, there was Offutt.

I don't know if this piece is worth $50., but it reminded me to read our Lodge's History again.

We are all a part of Scouting's history, right now. Let the tradition continue!

Loopy Patches

I really like the new Boy Scout uniform! I got the cotton pants and shirt and they feel and wear great.

I like the Velcro pockets too. I don't understand why there are buttons on the back of the pants? I like the Venture uniform pants with the Velcro closure. I guess somebody thinks that buttoning up your wallet is better.

I got to thinking about the new shirt with the Velcro closures and thought, would my dream come true of no more loopy, dangle things?

After close inspection of the new shirt, there is a lone button sewn on the underside to the pocket flap!

Urrrrrr!

Advertise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want "new business", then you must advertise. Spread the word! Preach the gospel!

I was pleasantly surprised to see both Pack 12 and Troop 12 having an ad in the 2008 Pikeville Soccer Program. Parents that support soccer, can do Scouts!

Although, sports and Scouting, both compete for time. It will work, if you try!

Sweden 2011

2011 is right around the corner and the host country, Sweden is on top of it already and has the WJ Trading Post open.

You can get 10 of these jewels for only 100 Sweden Kronor or around $14.86, plus shipping. Fair price! They also have T-shirts and some other cool stuff.

I definitely like the $ conversion rate better in Sweden, than last year in England.

NOAC 2009

The National Order of the Arrow Conference is less than a year away, and that means it is time to start thinking about patches!

Several Lodges have already started selling special "fund raiser" sets to help pay for transportation costs. Then there will be "delegate" issues too.

We have some creative folks around here. Let's have something really cool for the big party in Bloomington, IN next year!

PMT Trail Crew

There has been a lot of effort and work going into our Pioneer Mountain Trail around Camp McKee this year.

Don Combs finished his vision of trail improvements over the weekend. Water bars, new bridge, and general tree cutting. Still to come will be better signs along the trail plus granite begin and end markers.

We are lucky to have such a nice hiking trail and a BIG Scout Salute to all of those who are helping to keep it that way!

Last Ordeal

Kawida Lodge had a wonderful Ordeal, Brotherhood, and Service event at Camp McKee over the weekend. Andy Smith, finally received his Vigil and his Indian name translates to "Good Natured One". That fits!

We received 52 new members, 9 Brotherhood conversions, took down all of the tents, and did some major work on the Pioneer Mountain Trail. Of course, great food and fellowship to top it all off.

A. Watts gave me the honor of presenting Andy with his Vigil Certificate.

New construction is going on in the arena. Very nice!

A behind the scenes peek.

Evan Coleman from Troop 12 received his Ordeal membership.

Commissioner Staff

The Great Lonesome Pine District had it's first official Roundtable Meeting, since May, last night and the attendance was good. Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders were well represented and our small Appalachian group is doing big things in the Scouting Way.

The surprise of the night was our D.E. Jeremy Tackett showing up, just after he had his wisdom teeth cut out today. That was inspiring to say the least.

The big announcement was that Tim Dyer has accepted to be our District Commissioner and his partner in crime, Barry Combs will help as an Assistant District Commissioner.

Thanks to all of those who volunteer and serve the greatest program for youth in the world: Scouting!

Barry Combs and Tim Dyer, for the first time in silver loops.

Scouting Magazine Survey

I recently received an email from the BSA wanting me to take a short survey about "Scouting" magazine.

It seems that from the questioning, they are considering dropping the publication all together, making you pay extra for it, and / or just making it a web only communication.

More Changes.

The Internet has changed the way that we communicate, and it would be cheaper and just as effective to read it online once a month.

I'm sure some folks will still want that hard copy to arrive in the mail once a month.

"Boy's Life" has been optional and for an additional charge, for as long as I can remember.

Green Earth Outdoors

Our old WJ Scoutmaster, Douglas Wagoner, from up in the Lincoln Heritage Council, has put together a business to offer his services and experience to help Scouts and other groups.

Green Earth Outdoors offers LNT, camping, hiking, canoeing, and more.

I recommend using Douglas. The quality of any High Adventure trip is directly related to the knowledge and performance of your guide.

Check it out: http://www.greenearthoutdoors.com/meetyourguide.html

211 Patches

I was recently checking out some of the 2007 World Jamboree stuff on eBay the other day and saw a couple of our Troop 211 pieces. The round World Crest and the infamous "silky patch".

Between the 40 of us who attended last year, we flooded the Scouting World with thousands of these Friendship Gift patches. 3,700 World Crest and 6,600 silky. They were actually pretty hot traders too. I can guarantee you that 100 years from now, if you search eBay for 2007 WJ stuff, these will show up.

Now if you just have to have one. Go ahead and start the bid at $10. If you do, please contact me, because I have some wonderful ocean front property that you would love here in Pikeville!

Labor Day

A BIG Scout Salute to all of those who work hard for a living and do so ethically.
