Lonesome Pine Council

I found this old picture of some Pikeville and Prestonsburg Scouts from the Lonesome Pine Council. Tim Brown tells me that it is the April 1961 Area 4-B Conclave Contingient - Tomahawk Lodge 241 at Camp McKee.

Conclave 2 Piece

A good friend who was down at the Council of Chiefs over the weekend, sent me this very nice 2 piece set from our upcoming Section SR 6 Conclave Host Lodge Sequoyah 184. I can't remember any Lodge in our Section that has ever done a full blown flap and pocket 2 piece?

This reminds me to print off the Conclave registration form and send it in.

Conclave is April 17-19, 2009 down at Camp Davy Crockett.

Home Again

We make it safely back to Camp McKee around 2:00 pm and drop every one off, and back to Pikeville around 4:00.

This was one of the best Scouting trips ever!

Thanks to Benjamin Alexander and the Blue Grass Council for hosting this educational and fun adventure.

We need more Scouts and Leaders
to go and attend this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Philly Trip

We get up early and head over to the "City of Brotherly Love" - Philadelphia, PA.

It is cold, but we get to see where the Constitution was signed and the Liberty Bell. We make a trip to South Philly and get a real Philly steak and cheese sandwich from Pat's Steaks.

We drive and spend the night somewhere in West Virginia.

It all started here.

The sound of Liberty rings still.

"The Van" has been to many places, but this is the best!

Bread, meat, Cheese Whiz, and love.

Feeling The History

Learning leadership in the "Cradle of Liberty" is awesome. This is the place where all states joined together to become one nation.

Our conference includes actors who take us back in history. A 50 acre grove of state by state, Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. The tour of Valley Forge itself, and a service project that teaches proper US flag retirement.

It was a very cold and lonely start for our nation.

It took a lot of prayer!

Great men stepped forward and took great risks.

Several died gallantly for our nation.

We remember them all.

Once a flag, now a memory and a future hope.

Thinking,...

At the Freedoms Foundation - Price of Freedom, Scouts are taught leadership through a series of challenges through interaction with other Scouts from all over the USA. It truly is a great meeting of the minds.

The process is awkward at first, but great things seem to start to grow. There are class room discussions, speakers, and team challenges.

The cost for this conference is free, however the Freedoms Foundation picks up the tab of $400 - $600 per Scout to cover the costs.

Good investment!

This is like school?

I have to think!

Heading North

We leave Pikeville and encounter a straight wind storm. Trees down all over the place. We make it to McKee with no problems.

Everyone else makes it to Karrack Lodge and the power goes out around 11:00 pm. Typical cabin camping.

We get up early and ride at 6:00 am and drive, drive, drive. We arrive at Valley Forge, PA around 4-ish.

Butt Time is all about getting there.

The Freedoms Foundation campus is very nice.

Lots of reminders of what it is all about.

There is time for fun too!

And time for eating some good food also.

Price of Freedom

Heading out today, to drive the van with a good group of Eagle Scouts from the Blue Grass Council to the Price of Freedom Conference up in Valley Forge, PA.

Designed for Eagle Scouts, Sea Scout Quartermasters, or Venturing Scouts that have earned the Silver Award, this program challenges participants to learn about the sacrifices made to establish and protect the ideals of a free society. In addition to discussions and guest lectures on current issues of citizenship, patriotism, leadership, and heroism, the program includes tours of Colonial Philadelphia and Valley Forge National Park.

McKee Damage

Daniel "The Weather Man" Gaeddert sent me this picture outside of Campsite #3. He and the pre camp inspection team were at Camp McKee over the weekend. Minimal damage, but there is still no electricity.

Current Weather Conditions

A lot of Kentucky has been hit with some really bad weather. Making the National news this week.

Ranger Ken Green sent me this shot of frozen Lake Vough and a very cold looking arena and dining hall. Ken has been roughing it without power. Just a generator, fireplace, and good Scout Spirit.

Okpik comes to McKee?

2009 Kawida Flap

Here is an artist's rendition of what the 2009 Kawida standard issue will look like. Very traditional. I've always liked the "Blue Bellies".

This is only the first of several issues for our Lodge this year. I'm expecting a special surprise for the NOAC issue.
